HP P2000 – “Unable to create volume NewVolume. The vdisk was not found on this system.”

When creating a new volume on an HP P2000G3 the system throws the following error in the GUI:
"Unable to create volume NewVolume. The vdisk was not found on this system."

Eventually we tried to create the volume by using the CLI, but this gave us a similar error notification:
"Error: The vdisk was not found on this system."

In our troubleshooting we:

  • checked if the system had some unwritable cache by executing the command:
    # show unwritable-cache
    Unwritable System Cache
    -----------------------
    Percent of unwritable cache in controller A: 0
    Percent of unwritable cache in controller B: 0
  • we tried to create the volume by using the serial number of the vdisk instead of the name:
    1. show the vdisks:
      # show vdisks
      Name Serial Number
      ------------------------------------------------------------------
      MyVDisk 00c0ffdaaea50000d6f8b14b00000000
    2. create the volume:
      # create volume vdisk 00c0ffdaaea50000d6f8b14b00000000 size 10GB AnotherTest
      Info: The volume was created. (AnotherTest)
      Success: Command completed successfully. (2013-11-12 12:50:49)

Eventually it became clear the reference between the name of the vdisk and the vdisk name was faulty.
None of our volumes defined gave any issues. Expanding or renaming a volume was possible without any errors.

Solution:

  1. rename the vdiskname to vdiskname-new;
  2. create a volume in it to verify if this functions;
  3. rename it back to vdiskname;
  4. delete the volume on the vdisk;
  5. create the volume as initially requested.
