I got called this weekend to look at a CommVault restore of a Linux FileSystem which goes in pending modus with the error message mentioned below. This problem has been encountered on CommVault Simpana 9 Service Pack 14.
“Error Code: [32:254] Description: Read operation from media [tapelabel] could not be completed. The reason: Read operation cannot be completed as none of the resources available can be used. Please check the following: 1. There are drives with compatible recording format to the media being read. 2. There are resources (Drives, Libraries, MediaAgents, etc.) that are online and ready to be used. If you still have an issue, please contact customer support.”
I tried to forcely mount the tape device into a free tape device by using one of the dedicated media servers. This operation worked without any issue! So, it’s clear the issue is related to the server itself. During my investigation it came to my attention the client was functioning as a media server as well.
When I checked the tape devices linked to the media server by using the tree in the console, I didn’t notice anything wrong. However when I consulted the “Library and Drive Configuration” and requested a rescan of the devices, we noticed all the tape devices are unavailable for this Media Agent.
After an investigation, I noticed a 3rd party de-activated the Fiber Channel ports on the fabric to protect the database files from human error. Ofcourse they forgot that the tape devices are presented over the same physical connections.
When I restarted the restore job and selected another Media Agent manually (instead of the server being restored), the restore worked without any issue.
Hope this helps!
