We ran into the following error during the migration from Oracle backups taken with HP Data Protection (version 6.20) towards CommVault Simpana (version 10 service pack 8).
The first database backup executed with CommVault Simpana 10 throws the following error message. Please note the filesystem backups are perfectly conducted.
“Description: RMAN Script execution failed with error [ORA-19554: error allocating device, device type: SBT_TAPE, device name: ]. Please check the Logs for more details.
Source: server, Process: ClOraAgent”
A more thorough investigation of the RMAN log gives us the following records:
“RMAN-03009: failure of allocate command on ch channel at 01/29/2015 08:03:02
ORA-19554: error allocating device, device type: SBT_TAPE, device name:
ORA-27211: Failed to load Media Management Library
Recovery Manager complete.”
After some research we found out that the Oracle software load it’s DLL files (ORASBT.dll particularly) only during a startup of the database. As long it has not been restarted it will keep working with configuration found in the old DLL files.
We scheduled a reboot for the system in total and now data protection operations are perfectly executed and successfully finished.
Hope this helps!
